DIY Cleaning RecipesAs we discussed in our previous article, “Replace Your Toxic Cleaning Products – Use Essential Oils Instead”, the majority of the cleaning products on the market today are full of toxins that are affecting our health. We can use natural products and essential oils instead and in this article, we will discuss the natural products and essential oils recipes for cleaning.

Toxin-free cleaning solutions are not just better for your health, but save you money and leave your home smelling fresh and clean?

These are some of the items and natural products you will need for the recipes we have for you.  You probably already have some of them on hand:

  • Baking SodaBaking-Soda
    • Absorbs and eliminate odors.
    • It is a gentle abrasive product that allows you to safely scrub and clean countertops, sinks, and tubs.
  • Castile Soap
    • Cuts through grease and stains.
    • Lifts dirt and grime.
    • Used in soap recipes.

WARNING:  Avoid adding castile soap to any mix that calls for vinegar.  The two substances will react and form a slimy mess.

  • Olive Oil – An inexpensive olive oil like Bertolli Olive Oil will do nicely.
    • Natural cleaner for leather.
    • Polish for wood.
  • White Vinegar – You will use this for a lot of cleaning, so save yourself time and get the big jug.
    • A Natural antibacterial and anti fungal.
    • Cuts grease and grime.
    • Dissolves mineral deposits.

WARNING: Do not use white vinegar on stone (granite, marble or soapstone). The acid in vinegar can damage these surfaces over time.

    • Distilled Water – Many uses and good to have on hand. Many appliances that use water need distilled water to avoid calcium buildup.

Microfiber Cloth

  • Microfiber Clothes – Has a variety of cleaning uses.
    • Useful for windows.
    • Useful for mirrors.
    • Useful for dusting.
    • Useful for cleaning countertops.
    • Absorb better than a regular cloth.
    • Leave a streak-free surface.
    • Soft and non-abrasive, will not scratch paint or other surfaces.
  • Glass Spray Bottles – 8 oz keeps you from wasting product when it's time to make new product. New cleaner should be made every 1 1/2 to 2 months.
  • Salt – Table salt is used for scouring hard surfaces.
    • Natural abrasive.
    • Used to get out rust, soap scum and other grimy substances.
    • Can prevent overflow of bubbles from washing machine or dishwasher when sprinkled on the bubbles.
  • Borax – Sodium Borate. Does not harm the environment and is not absorbed through the skin.
    • Used as a laundry booster.
    • Used as a stain remover.
    • Used as a toilet cleaner.
  • Vodka – Natural disinfectant.
    • Cleans surfaces.
    • Naturally eliminates odors.
    • A substitute for rubbing alcohol to avoid the smell.
  • Vegetable Glycerin – Useful in essential oil recipes. It thickens and moisturizes the skin.Vegetable Glycerine
    • Used in soaps.
    • Used in air fresheners.
    • Used in Potpourris
  • Essential Oils – Offer natural cleansing and purifying properties.

NOTE:  Why do we recommend glass bottles and containers?  Essential oils can degrade plastic.  However, when using only a few drops it is diluted enough that you might be okay with storing these mixtures in plastic bottles.  We just normally store anything with essential oils in glass containers.

Now For Some Recipes …

All Purpose Cleaner

  • 3/4 cups distilled water
  •  tablespoons white vinegar
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 15 drops orange essential oil
  • 8 oz glass sprayer

Mix all ingredients in a glass spray bottle and shake to combine. Spray on the desired surface and wipe clean.

Daily Shower Spray

  • 1/4 cup vodka (or rubbing alcohol if you don't mind the strong smell)
  • 3/4 cups water
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 8 oz glass spray bottle

Mix all ingredients in glass spray bottle and shake to mix. Shake well before using and spray in shower and walls each day. No rinsing required.

Soft Scrub

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 10 drops lime essential oil

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, use immediately to clean stove top, sinks, or tubs. Store any remaining mixture in a glass jar.

Toilet Cleaner

  • 8 oz Glass Spray Bottle
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 10 drops tea tree essential oil
  • Container with shaker lid (like a large spice shaker)

Add baking soda, salt, and tea tree oil together in a shaker container and mix together. Add vinegar to a glass spray bottle. Spray vinegar in the toilet bowl, then sprinkle in the powder mix. Let fizzing occur, add more vinegar if needed. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Scrub with toilet brush and flush.

Floor CleanerMop and Bucket

  • 1 gallon of water
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap
  • 15 drops white fir essential oil
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil

Put all ingredients in a mop bucket or sink with closed drain. Use a mop to clean floors with cleaning solution. No need to rinse. Allow to dry.

Cleaning Wipes

  • 1 roll thick, strong paper towels
  • 2 cups warm distilled water
  • 15 drops tea tree oil
  • 1 tablespoon castile soap
  • container with an air-tight lid (or a gallon-size Ziploc bag)

Cut paper towel roll in half to use only half now. Combine water, essential oil, and castile soap in a small bowl. Place paper roll half into a container with a lid. Pour mixture over paper towels and let soak for 10 minutes. Turn the container over and let sit for another 10 minutes. Remove cardboard tube from paper towels and discard. Pull wipes from the center of the roll when ready to use. Keep covered with lid when not in use.

Dusting Spray

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 10 drops white fir or lemon essential oil
  • 3/4 cups distilled water
  • 8 oz glass spray bottle

Put all ingredients except the water in a spray bottle. Swirl to combine. Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Put the top on and shake. To use, shake and lightly mist onto a microfiber cloth. Wipe down the object completely.

Furniture PolishFurniture Polish

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil
  • 2 oz glass lotion pump bottle

Mix everything together in a bottle and shake. To use, squirt several pumps on a microfiber cloth and wipe the wood surface clean. Polishing only needs to be done every 1-2 months and use the dusting spray above for in-between cleaning.

Stain Remover for Clothing

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable glycerin
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap
  • 3/4 cups distilled water
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 8 oz glass spray bottle

Add all ingredients to the glass spray bottle. Shake well. Spray liberally to the stain. Lightly rub the fabric together to get remover into the stain. Allow to soak before adding to wash.

Window Spray Cleaner

  • 3 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon rubbing alcohol to prevent streaks
  • 10 drops citrus essential oil
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 8 oz glass spray bottle

Mix all ingredients together in glass bottle except for the water. Swirl to combine. Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Replace spray bottle top and shake. Use with a microfiber cloth for the best result.

Disinfecting SprayDisinfecting Spray

  • 3 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops orange essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 8 oz spray bottle

Fill the spray bottle with ingredients. Replace spray top on the bottle and shake well. Shake before each spray to mix evenly. This spray can be used in bathrooms, kitchen, office, etc. Essential oils and vinegar have natural germ-killing benefits that are non-toxic to your family.

Refrigerator and Microwave Cleaner

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil
  • 8 oz spray bottle

Mix all ingredients in the glass bottle. Shake well and spray inside fridge or microwave. Scrub and wipe clean using a damp cloth.

Mold & Mildew Cleaner

  • 5 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops orange essential oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon borax
  • 2/3 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 8 oz glass bottle with sprayer

Mix all ingredients in a glass bottle. Shake well and spray on mold/mildew. Let sit for 15 minutes and wipe clean with damp microfiber cloth.

Citrus Dish Soap

  • 3/4 cup liquid castile soap
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable glycerin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil
  • 5 drops orange essential oil
  • 5 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 8 oz glass bottle with a pump top

Mix all ingredients in a glass bowl and gently whisk until blended together. Pour into the 8 oz bottle. Add a few squirts to dishwater as the sink is filling or place a small amount on a cloth to hand wash dishes.

Stove Top Cleaner

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 5 drops lime essential oil

Mix all ingredients together until they form a paste. Spread it over the stove top and burners. Let sit for at least 15 minutes (longer for hard-to-remove stains). Using a sponge, scrub the mixture into the grease/grime. Remove excess cleaner and wipe the surface clean.

Foaming Hand SoapFoaming Hand Soap

  • 2 tablespoons castile soap
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 10 oz foaming soap pump

Add castile soap, essential oils, and olive oil into the bottle and swirl gently to blend. Add water to bottle and place pump top on the bottle. Shake well to mix.
